Meet Becky! I know so much of our local Fairfield community recognizes her because she works at the Stop & Shop on the circle in town and she has helped thousands and thousands of people bag their groceries with a smile.

Becky has worked at Stop & Shop in Fairfield, CT for 29 years! When I asked her what her favorite part of her job is, she said talking to nice customers.  When I asked her what is her least favorite part, she said “When people are nasty”.  She doesn’t understand when people are mean or impatient with her but she focuses on the people who are kind and grateful for her help.

Just like the kindness she shows to us as customers matters greatly at check out, the kindness we show to her, other baggers, and cashiers everywhere, 100% matters! Acknowledging one another, taking an interest, and making a connection just feels good! So why not looks for ways to do so?

My kids sometimes lament how I talk to everyone I meet and often implore me when we are headed into any retail store anywhere, to “Please don’t talk to everyone” so we can just get in and out of the store quickly. I tell them, “I’m sorry, but I can’t make that type of commitment”. Talking to, taking an interest in, and showing gratitude to the people I interact with on a daily basis is nice for the recipient, and selfishly, it uplifts me. Win – win!

I’ve noticed that if I’m feeling down, and I just walk in town to one of my favorite places like Catch a Healthy Habit, No. 299, Fresh Flower Bar,  Yoga for Everybody, The Pantry, Snappy Gator, Capri, or Saugatuck Sweets, I inevitably feel uplifted because the owners and employees of these places in our community have become my friends. And sometimes you just want to go where everyone knows your name. I realized that has come from years of asking others their name and wanting to know who they are and what makes them happy.  I have an insatiable curiosity for knowing people’s stories, and I have come to realize that as diverse as all of our individual stories are, we are more the same than we are different.
